A sample sunrise excursion from Malang. For clients travelling through Java, we can also plan an overnight closer to Bromo and adjust the start accordingly.

Around 00:15 · Malang
Leave the city while it sleeps.
The morning begins after midnight. Settle into the car for the road out of Malang, with a warm layer within reach for the highlands.
Around 02:00 · Into the highlands
Change to a local jeep.
The next stretch is by 4WD. There is time to reach the selected viewpoint before dawn; the route depends on the pickup point and park arrangements.
Around 05:00 · First light
Wait for the shape of the caldera.
As daylight reaches the slopes, the scale of Bromo becomes easier to take in. Stay for the changing light, with time to look beyond the camera. Cloud may soften or hide the view.
Around 06:00 · Sea of sand
See the landscape from below.
Continue into the sand plain where access permits. Choose the permitted viewpoints and walks with the local team, according to conditions and the travellers’ mobility.
Around 09:00 · The road back
Head down towards Malang.
Return through the highlands after the morning excursion. Keep the rest of the day lightly planned: the arrival time in Malang depends on stops, traffic and the route.
