BANYUWANGI · EAST JAVA

Ijen, before the day begins.

A night drive, an uphill walk and a crater lake that comes into colour with the morning. Build in time to climb slowly and rest afterwards.

A JOURNEY, HOUR BY HOUR

From the night drive to the crater rim.

A sample private excursion from Banyuwangi and back. The walking pace, authorised access and weather shape the morning.

Planning noteThe sequence is indicative. Pickup and return times are confirmed for the travel date. Blue-fire viewing and crater descent are not promised; follow the park’s current restrictions and the local guide’s instructions.

  1. Late night

    Leave Banyuwangi behind

Leave the hotel with a warm layer close to hand. The drive takes you into the highlands, towards the trailhead at Paltuding.

  2. At Paltuding

Meet the guide, check the kit

Before walking, check your headlamp and mask with the local guide. Entry documents and the health certificate are part of the preparations.

  3. When the gate opens

Take the climb at your own pace

Follow the permitted trail uphill, taking breaks with the guide. The final route and turnaround point depend on access and conditions that morning.

  4. First light

Watch the lake come into view

As daylight reaches the crater, look across the turquoise water from an authorised viewpoint. Stay on the route agreed with the guide.

  5. Later that morning

    Walk down, then rest

Return to Paltuding and the vehicle for Banyuwangi. Keep time for breakfast and rest before the next leg of the journey; meals are separate.

FOR YOUR CLIENTS

Give this morning enough room.

The uphill walk, overnight start and volcanic conditions need to suit the travellers. Tell us about fitness, mobility and onward connections before we propose the route.

The park publishes health-document requirements and scheduled closures. Check the current rules before travel.
